Halloween Costumes - Tips to Help Avoid the Fire Hazards

Choosing Halloween costumes is as much a part of Halloween as is the evening itself. Often neglected are the safety considerations, when selecting a costume. These considerations are equally important for children and adults. One of the most important safety considerations is preventing an outfit catching fire.

Fire safe costumes as well as masks, wigs and other accessories are of up most importance. It is not unusual for a Halloween news story to tell of someone, usually a child, being seriously burned on Halloween. Therefore, this should be a top consideration. Look at labels and make sure the costume is flame resistant.

This applies not only for the costume itself, but also to the accessories to be used as part of the attire. Some experts feel that nylon and 100% polyester materials are better materials to choose, because they melt rather than burn. However, they become hot when melting and can cause burns, though possibly not as easily as some other materials. Furthermore, keep in mind that other clothing items, including under garments can still burn. In addition, flame resistant means just that. The flame resistant parts may be more resistant to burning, but they can still burn if the circumstances are right.

There is a second side to the issue of fire safety on Halloween. It is extremely important to avoid open flames, especially candle fires. Although less commonly used now, many people used to put open flame candles in their decorations, such as pumpkins. Some people still do use them. Stay a good distance from such items.

Prior to Halloween it is wise to discuss the hazards that exist on Halloween. Before Halloween have a family discussion and on things to look out for and what to do if a costume does catch fire. Stress how important it is to immediately removing the costume no matter what. Also talk about rolling on the ground, if clothing catches fire.

There are a number of other safety considerations for Halloween. However, because fire during Halloween is such a serious matter and often forgotten about in the excitement of the event, this article focuses selecting safe Halloween costumes and accessories and avoiding open fires.
